“It’s like having your own Board of Directors”
It is a simple question, but very complex at the same time. Most growers do not recognize their “Board of Directors.” By definition, a Board of Directors (BoD) is a group of qualified professionals elected by the shareholders to represent them and their best interest in making decisions and setting company policy. So, the question on the floor is “Who is your Board of Directors?” and what people help the shareholder (you, the farmer) set these policies and protect your best interest? We suggest that by default, not design, it is your input retailers, seed salesman, insurance agents, machinery salesman, bankers, etc.
Who Is Your Board of Directors?
So, how did your BoD come about? The reasons growers have given: “That’s who my dad always used” “Oh, he’s my brother-in-law (or cousin or uncle)” “We grew up together” “I go to church with him/her” “We were in 4-H together.” In agriculture it is sometimes hard to separate relationships from business even when it is not in your best interest.
Remember that the BoD is to represent the shareholder’s best interest not their own. Does your BoD represent your best interests or the company paying their commission or salary? Your BoD is unique in the fact that they earn their living from sales to the shareholders but are responsible to their employer. It is food for thought as to where you put your trust in choosing those who represent you in your policy decisions.
